L'antispécisme exige aujourd'hui violemment la « libération » des bêtes. Cela supposerait d'interdire tout produit d'origine animale, ainsi que des pratiques jugées « oppressives » (équitation, chasse, corrida, zoos...), voire de préférer la vie d'un chimpanzé à celle d'un handicapé mental. L'antispéciste est au végane ce que l'intégriste est au croyant. Ce courant dispose de théoriciens influents, comme Peter Singer, et de relais politico-médiatiques, comme l'association L214 ou le Parti animaliste.
Or la disposition des animaux à souffrir ne suffit pas à leur donner des droits fondamentaux sur le modèle des droits de l'homme. Il est également malhonnête d'enrôler dans une telle cause le féminisme et l'antiracisme. Enfin cette utopie cache mal ses liens avec le transhumanisme... Les « libérateurs » des animaux apparaissent alors davantage comme le symptôme d'une société qui s'invente une idéologie pour mieux affronter le vide qui la ronge : productivisme sans fin, industrie agro-alimentaire devenue folle, perte du lien social, destruction de la planète...
Mais ce n'est pas en faisant de l'animal un nouveau messie que nous infléchirons notre destin. Ariane Nicolas est journaliste indépendante. Ce livre est son premier essai.
